Flags That Look Almost Identical (and How to Tell Them Apart)

Some flags are so similar that even geography buffs get them wrong. A slightly different shade, a swapped stripe or a change in proportions is sometimes all that separates two nations. Here are the most famous flag look-alikes and reliable tricks to tell them apart.
Chad vs Romania
These are among the closest pairs in the world. Both use vertical bands of blue, yellow and red. The main difference is the shade of blue: Chad's is a darker, navy-leaning blue, while Romania's is slightly brighter. Because they are so close, most people simply memorise them as a pair and rely on context to decide which is which.
Indonesia vs Monaco
Both flags are two horizontal bands of red over white. The trick here is proportion: Indonesia's flag is longer and more rectangular, while Monaco's is closer to square. Poland uses the same two colours but flips them, with white on top and red below, which makes it easy to separate from the other two.
More classic confusions
- Netherlands vs Luxembourg: both are red, white and blue horizontal bands, but Luxembourg's blue is lighter and its flag is longer.
- Ireland vs Ivory Coast: both have green, white and orange vertical bands, but they are mirror images. Ireland puts green on the left; Ivory Coast puts orange on the left.
- Chad, Romania, Andorra and Moldova: all share blue-yellow-red vertical bands, but Andorra and Moldova add a coat of arms in the centre.
How to train your eye
The best way to master look-alikes is to study them side by side rather than one at a time. Ask which element differs: the shade, the order of colours, the proportions, or a central emblem. Once you know exactly what to look for, the pairs stop being confusing and become easy points.
